copenhagen’s music for dreams continue their string of pearls in 2016 with the 12” release of apiento & lx’s dish. at the request of cutting edge danish designer trine lindegaard, paul byrne (aka apiento) created this music to accompany her dish project - a playful fusion of food, fashion and art - when it premiered at 2016 copenhagen fashion week. for the project, lindegaard worked with members of integration organization itmv in copenhagen to produce clothing items based on their favourite food dishes, apiento and regular collaborator uk-based house producer lx, used the recorded interviews of their discussions as raw material with cut-up samples of the women’s voices woven into the music for the runway show. the result is an ethereal and avant-garde mix of crisp beats and featherlight percussion blended in a fresh and modern oriental-flavoured balearic groove packed with gorgeous flutes and kalimbas. the powerful dub on the flip-side brings a heavier more trippy feel geared firmly for the dancefloor. as well as a string of great remixes and edits as apiento, paul byrne is also well known for his behind-thescenes work with labels like junior boy s own, international feel and deewee, and for his highly influential blog test pressing. limited edition vinyl - don’t miss.

last year, an enigmatic name seemed to appear out of thin-air. sam weston was apparently a fresh upstart in the australian house-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled shiraz voyager. with this rose-tinted house release in hand, weston arrived on the scene and people took notice. the tape sold out within weeks. thing was, sam weston was not a fresh-face at all. he was here all along, although more commonly known as one half of influential sydney techno duo – alba. lorded for their brand of live-fire robotic grooves, alba became trailblazers in a town more miami than berlin, where brooding and rolling hypnosis weren’t often preferred to fist pumping “bangers”. wanting to flex his lovin’ spoonful of hypnotic lo-flung house, weston decided to release a handful of edits on his soundcloud. immediate attention was conjured and sam weston released the aforementioned shiraz voyager ep to a pretty amazing response. almost overnight, australia had a new hero in weston’s warm compositions that summon memories of sunny days and happier times.

nice price deal !!! gioele giacopelli, also known under the jwl moniker, is an italian producer and dj who had his music released by many international record labels such as plus plus, soul shift music, sexonwax and fortezza records. the uk based label pathway traxx released his disco cuts ep on vinyl, which held the number 1 spot in multiple charts and its track called again n again was supported by famous artists such as ben ufo. since 2016, jwl is signed under soundscapes records/escape series, where he collaborates with tuscan musician and producer inno (giovanni ferretti). giovanni ferretti participated as a multi-instrumentalist with a band called sycamore age on the album of the same name, released on santeria/audioglobe records in march 2012. the album was distributed by rough trade in german speaking countries, france and belenux, where it has been selling well. in december 2013, fortezza records released hard dreamers ep which included tracks by giovanni ferretti and jwl. at that time, jwl was involved in various multimedia and electroacoustic projects within and outside of his musical studies. soon, inno and jwl will release a 4-track ep escape series 003 on vinyl.

“day of my death” by pavel milyakov, also known as buttechno, is his 8th release coming out this year. it consists of 6 pieces which were composed for gosha rubchinskiy s/s 17 show and performed in a extraordinary place in florence which is depicted on the front cover. mostly ambient, overdriving noise soundscapes and spoken word collages referring to the dreamy mood of the show. this work is more serious and mature than milyakov’s previous releases, exploring deeper and sacred images of his world.

crystal structures returns with its fourth instalment, in the guise of a two track ep, composed by the multifaceted chas burns, more commonly known as flow . label honcho of two distinguished imprints of his own, low pressings and beat code , flow s extensive back catalogue of eminent records are assumed collectables for the most ardent crate diggers. regularly championed by vinyl purveyors including ricardo villalobos, arpiar and praslea, flow s elegant style has been akin to the trademark early 2000 s uk sound of the likes of eddie richards, terry francis and nathan coles. his sawwhore ep on crystal structures embodies that very same rolling tech-house through techno eloquence, and will undoubtedly become accustomed to any record bag which it gracefully finds its way into.

following on from david morales appearance on the label earlier this year, rekids tap up shed and ryan elliott for a pair of percussive reimaginations. well known for remixes of the thompson twins, shawn christopher, clive griffin and the pet shop boys, morales red zone moniker was conceived during the def mix legends formative years at the renowned club sharing the same name. 50 weapons and monkeytowns shed adopts his head high alter ego for a remix that draws the originals vocals into the spotlight before planting thunderous kick drums beneath whilst dusty pads operate above. meanwhile, ostgut ton affiliate ryan elliott crafts a reimagination that incorporates breaky percussion, a rumbling low end and sweeping astral synths.

the first release on neon finger found dutch veteran dj overdose turning out a surprising blend of boogie on the techno hop lp, but for the second installment on the spanish label the remit proves to be wide as inkswel and lesser known the jungle sessions join forces for secret river. this meeting of minds, recorded on a raft of vintage electro-funk equipment, culminates in a perfect slab of sweet, low slung grooves for every boogie enthusiast to engage with. there are instrumental delights aplenty, but also some welcome vocal cuts such as the essential -sucka free- featuring john robinson on the mic.

with a pair of sturdy releases behind them already melbourne s short black crew call upon lesser-known talent rustal to deliver the goods in a deep, techy style. before the original productions dub maestro brendon moeller drops in to deliver a version of -privilege- that heads into the echo chamber and doesn t let up for the duration. it s a powerful, immersive beast of a track that provides a fitting alternative to the uptempo, melodic thrust of the original version. -forwards backwards down- pushes the chords to the front of the mix and jacks up the drums for a proper fist-shaking workout.

sunandbass recordings returns with the four track fade away ep from arpxp, brilliantly showcasing the producer s ability to turn his hand to a wide range of different styles of drum & bass. well known and recognised for both the quality and diversity of his work, arpxp has released with iconic labels such as metalheadz, critical and of course sunandbass recordings, but now his fade away ep gives him a platform to really showcase what his work stands for, and where he is musically at the moment. with the smooth, melancholic vibes of fade away alongside mc fava, and the shoe-gazing vibes of ˜fifth step is goodbye , arpxp shows his ability to build a solid groove, with well sculpted sounds all interwoven together to form strong memorable tracks.

after three years and ten eps, amsterdam s will & ink label offers up its first full length from label favorite yaleesa hall and is called woodall. it explores texture, space and sound design in fascinating ways. since 2014 yaleesa hall has released four eps on the label and has become known for breakbeat laced stripped-down techno. this debut album finds the producer indulging a less dance floor focussed version of his sound, and one that is better suited to the full length format. explaining that his tracks most often start as -sound structures and experiments- that then get reworked for the club, here they stay closer to their original forms. woodall is sound sculpture that is electronic and synthetic but also made of real world sounds that are all truly absorbing. comes in gatefold sleeve.

patrick wade, better known as dead horse beats is a producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist living in montreal, canada. since the release of his first album in 2011, wade has garnered attention for his unique brand of hazy, rhythmic, soul-styled creations, and energetic live spectacles featuring a slough of live instrumentation, electronics and guest performers. after the release 2015 s acclaimed single people lp and a brief stint with london s black butter records, dhb partnered with brooklyn based bastard jazz recordings for his premiere vinyl pressing - the fall 2016 release of bad hopes ep. bad hopes is the culmination of a new, fully realized sonic direction for dead horse beats, inspired by the sounds of the montreal scene in which dhb is embedded, equal parts glittering r&b, and undeniable deep house inspired soundscapes, fusing fully on bad hopes, alongside friends and collaborators frase (vocals on she said) and jason simpkin (additional production and instrumentation throughout) dhb blends his voice and lyrics with bassy grooves, lush synths and sharp, angular percussion into a cohesive, rolling soundscape.

veil of light is the synth/postpunk solo project of a mystery man from zurich known to the wider world only as m. the project was born in 2012 when all the tracks for the veil of light eponymous 2013 ep released on belaten were recorded by m in a bunker near zurich. that last fact incidentally is a good way to describe the music released under this project’s name much like the mental image of a bunker it is cold dark and forces one into a contemplative resigned state. the influences that immediately come to mind listening to veil of light are 1980’s wave music post punk industrial and dark ambient all weaved together by an overarching depressive yet dreamy atmosphere. it has been called gothgaze and the description seems apt. the followup to the opener the 7” cold skin single released on edition gris and the debut lp simply titled as well as this years head/blood/chest ep continue in the same vein.

after last years legohead ep which featured on fabric 085 mix cd, fatdog returns this time to his own label. with this is how i feel we get a bumper selection of sun soaked stylings with dub touches chugging along nicely with the type of shuffling slo-mo rhythms that he is becoming known for. flip leans into funkier old school & electro territories, conjuring up slightly darker moods yet still keeping within the fat dog flavour, ending with a flip from d train - keep on, to great effect.

as claremont 56 speeds towards its’ ten-year anniversary, label founder paul murphy continues to champion little known producers and previously unheard artists.
over the past 12 months, the label has showcased material from rising talents such as bella figura, simon peter, paraiso and oma & amberflame. now, claremont 56 is adding another new name to the roster: statues.

new years deal - the next chapter in the creme organization ecplise series comes from cosmic garden with three original tracks and one remix from orgue electronique. little is known about cosmic garden other than he is from southern italy and has had two eps out in 2016, one on hotmix and one on cosmic rhythm. he heads out the blocks here with reptilian treant , six minutes of lo-fi deep house that is roomy and atmospheric. lazy synths bring soul and a gentle chatter of claps and hits helps drive it along. rare centaur is also way below the surface but is darker and more celestial, with turbulent bass, frantic claps and angelic chords glowing like a white light at the end of a tunnel. dutch house and electro don orgue electronique then remixes reptilian treant into something that is slick and serene, with metallic lines dancing above rubbery drums as big piano chords boucle up top. it is joyous and colourful and truly majestic before final track apocalyptic moose takes us back down into a mournful house vibe that echoes chicago with its roughhewn analogue textures and lovestruck chords.

randomly few times a year rutherford and eargoggle team up for some monkey business in the studio. as often the result is -monkeyshop- a journey into the deepest, darkest forrests and landscapes of the north. scandinavia is not known for the monkeys but they exist there especially arround gothenburg in the mountains.. the music is a mix between electro and disco, might call it electrodisco and its all programmed and recorded in with the most easy and understandable equipment so its possible for monekys to use... also for you that dont know about gothenburg music scene themselves discribe it like this... - gothenburg is not a jungle, its a zoo-

increasingly known for his productions as much as his storied dj sets, eric cloutier approaches the studio with the same kind of precision that marks out his club and festival appearances. on this first release on palinoia he exercises a keen sense of control over playful elements, not least on lead track -heuristic-. the nagging lead synth may hop around the mix, but it stays locked on to a thoroughly focused undercarriage of drums and low end that suits the professional techno set. -ipseity- is lighter in its demeanour thanks to some calming pad tones, but the strong structure of the track remains. the release rounds up with the slower thump of -opprobrium-, surmising cloutier s attitude to the warm-up part of a serious, long-lasting dj set.
